Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play regular roles in the shows Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate was a part of such television shows like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London Burning. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate became famous for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
